File Extension ODTFile extension ODT is associated with the Writer application that comes with the OpenOffice and StarOffice applications. Writer is a document authoring application similar to Word from Microsoft. It can run on popular operating system (OS) platforms including Mac, Windows, Linux, Solaris, and other open source OS. Writer was initially coded using the source code crafted for StarOffice. These applications where offered free for the public to download in their pursuit to lower the market share of Microsoft Office Applications which until now dominates in the market. The site was officially launched last October 2000 and immediately earned the trust of the public. Newer versions of the Writer are designed to allow users to attach macros. This is through the addition of OpenOffice.org Basic which was derived from StarOffice Basic and works similar to Visual Basic by Microsoft. Files using the ODT extension can be accessed and edited by several open source applications that can run on. For Mac operating systems, users can use applications such as NeoOffice Writer, AbiSource AbiWord, Apple TextEdit, and IBM Lotus Notes 8 and later versions. Similar applications can be used to open files under Windows and Linux. Aside for those KOffice KWord, Sun Microsystem's Writer, and Microsoft Word with compatibility pack can also be used to access and edit ODT files. Similar file extensions
